For fresh cut beams Douglas Fir is the undisputed champion. It combines the best of every issue you can consider. 

First, it is available in extremely large sizes (up to 36”x36”) and lengths (up to 60’).   

Because we are a full service mill, we can cut these monster timbers into any size you wish. Second, Douglas Fir, like Western Red Cedar, will remain relatively straight because it will relieve its stress by checking, which are stress cracks which do not affect the strength of the timber.  

Fir also has great strength and load capacities which make it ideal for exposed beams in rooms with long spans.  Fir takes stain well and it ranges in color from blonde to a dark orange. Because Douglas Fir is very “workable’ we are able to do several different distressing techniques that will give these new beams some character if you like.

The last big attraction to Douglas Fir is its price. It is a very affordable option that will allow you to get solid beams anywhere you want them.
